Water is the liquid expression of hydrogen and oxygen bonded together. Water is the universal solvent that sustains life. It possesses the properties that allow nutrients to flow through cells, fish through rivers, boats on lakes, and transfers heat on planetary scales. The water cycle transports moisture from the ocean, inland to the forests and meadows. Orographic lifting causes rain to fall as atmospheric water vapor condenses as it encounters topography. Evaporation and evapotranspiration return moisture to the atmosphere as water vapor. Water quality is directly related to water quantity, in both abundance and scarcity.
